Chargebacks and why they close the conversation

A chargeback is when you ask your bank to reverse a payment instead of asking us to fix it. It is a real right and it exists for fraud. It is a poor tool for a disagreement about a trip.

What happens the moment one opens

  • We are notified and a case opens on our side.
  • Your security deposit release is frozen until the bank closes the dispute.
  • Any related payout to your host is paused.
  • Closing your FanCars account is blocked while it is open.
  • The outcome is now the bank's to decide, on the bank's timetable, which is usually weeks.

Money the bank is already reversing cannot also be refunded or credited here, so the fast fixes below stop being available for the amount in dispute.

What to do instead

Almost everything a chargeback is used for has a faster route here:

  • A charge you think is wrong. Dispute it from your trip page inside its 72 hour window. Our team reviews it before anything is collected.
  • A damage claim you disagree with. Respond on the claim. It cannot be decided until you have replied or your 72 hour window has closed.
  • A car that was not as described. Report it from the trip page for a credit, a refund, or a swap.
  • Anything else. Open a ticket at /support and you get a case number to follow.

If you have already filed a chargeback, tell us anyway. We would rather have your side on the case than argue it through a form.
