Deposits and claims

How the deposit is set

The deposit is per trip and calculated by FanCars. It is your own insurance deductible plus a flat 500 dollars. Hosts do not choose it, cannot raise it, and do not see it as revenue. A lower deductible on your policy means a lower deposit.

It is an authorization hold placed on your card, not a charge. The money is not taken, it is reserved.

When it comes back

The hold starts releasing after you check out, on a short delay of about two days. It releases on its own unless something on the trip is still open.

Three things pause a release:

  • An open damage claim.
  • A charge on the trip you have disputed.
  • An open dispute raised with your bank.

Once the open item is settled, the release goes ahead on the next pass.

When it is used

If a damage claim resolves with an amount owed, part or all of the hold can be captured. A capture below the full hold releases the rest back to you.

A capture is not the end of the conversation. It arrives as a pending charge on your trip with a 72 hour window to dispute, the same as any other charge.
